System Impairment and Microbiologically Influenced Corrosion (MIC) Management:

To assess actual extent of impairment or biological intrusion, undertake diagnostic testing including, water sampling and metallurgical analysis.  As required, perform internal investigation using borescopic videography.  Prepare plans for selective demolition and replacement of piping and system components found to be unsalvageable.  Specify and co-ordinate chemical treatments, contractor services, and special considerations for ongoing maintenance and treatment of biological corrosion.

Protection Design, in association with our strategic partners, has developed a comprehensive stepped program for diagnosis and remediation of MIC:

  • Water sampling and analysis

  • Site survey, visual inspection and documentation of as-built conditions

  • Internal inspection with high-resolution video borescope ("snake") cameras as required

  • Identification and documentation of damage to the system

  • Metallurgical analysis of piping as may be required to assess the extent of corrosion and predicted life of system components

  • Preparation of plans for demolition, improvements and replacement of piping and system components beyond repair

  • Chemical treatment to clean scale and bacterial byproducts

  • Permanent treatment with corrosion inhibitors and biocide

  • Process and impairment management and representation to authorities having jurisdiction

Inspection, Testing and Maintenance Programming and Impairment Planning:

Review and assess fire protection system components, establish inspection and testing records archive and documents as built conditions as required.  Specify scope of ITM program and assist building management with implementation.  Develop impairment mitigation programs with building management and serving fire authorities.  Process management and owner representation to authorities having jurisdiction.

Construction Defects:

Inspect and investigate existing building systems to assess compliance with applicable codes, standards of care and workmanship.  Review plans and construction documents for soundness of design and approval by athorities having jurisdiction.  Research applicable codes and recommend practices to establish performance and standard-of-care benchmarks for evaluation of alleged defects of disputed installations. Advise counsel regarding cost estimates and prospective remedies for all stakeholders.
